For the scoping project on assessment of weather and climate services in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region from a humanitarian development perspective as part of the UK Met Office's WISER MENA programme. In my role as the research lead, I was responsible for conducting literature review, stakeholder analysis, key informant interviews and report writing.

TSUNAMI RESILIENT ISTANBUL (Development of disaster risk management plans for tsunamis in Istanbul) project by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality / METU Civil Engineering Department, Ankara, Turkey
Conducted stakeholder mapping to identify people, groups & organizations involved (and their interest in, importance to, & influence on) in the design, planning & implementation of tsunami action plans. Developed a workshop strategy for stakeholders to discuss their roles on capacity development in support of local tsunami warning, awareness, mitigation, infrastructure & research. Drafted an inventory of approaches, plans, manuals & guides as well as tools (brochures, posters, etc.) adopted in international, national and/or local levels for tsunami risk & preparedness. |

Developed a first draft of the assessment guidelines (checklist) for End-to-End Early Warning Systems (E2E EWS) for flood forecasting (within the scope of the framework of the Flood Forecasting Initiative – Task 2 of the FFI Advisory Group Work plan 2016-2019). Compiled a report on existing (interoperable) platforms for operational flood forecasting, providing critical insights into capabilities of these platforms on a comparative basis & with respect to operational needs of developing countries. Reviewed grey & scientific literature on hydrological models & operational platforms for flood forecasting. Developed an inventory of hydrological forecasting models, with emphasis on applicability of these models on different geographical, climate & meteorological settings. Developed a proposal for integration of youth & gender issues in WMO’s risk management activities. Conducted interviews with HFWR staff to highlight hydrology careers at international level. Prepared an inventory of youth initiatives on water & hydrology. Organized one-day meeting at WMO Secretariat to explore potential opportunities for collaboration with the Young Hydrologic Society (YHS). |

Reviewed grey & scientific literature on disaster resilience, preparedness, and risk perception; wrote a comprehensive report summarizing past & current findings w/ particular focus on tsunamis. Reviewed grey & scientific literature on crisis management & capacity building in operational context; led the writing of a report on institutional plans, response capacities & needs. Conducted questionnaire on tsunami awareness & preparedness; analysed the results for three case study sites at south western coasts of Turkey (Gulluk Bay). Coordinated a workshop w/ stakeholders to address challenges & requirements for local tsunami awareness & preparedness in Bodrum 2016. Designed educational materials for the EC Erasmus+ project TROYO (Training Of Youth for Preparedness Against Marine Induced Hazards) & the EU DG-ECHO project TSUMAPS-NEAM. Worked on development of H2020 project proposals on critical infrastructure resilience, coastal resilience for climate change & policy transformation for coastal communities in Europe. Provided administrative & organizational assistance. Coordinated a summer school on coastal hazards in Crete 2016, jointly w/ EU FP7 project PEARL (Preparing for Extreme and Rare events in coastaL regions). Coordinated the 2nd Annual Meeting of ASTARTE in Bodrum 2015. Prepared project newsletter. Managed social media accounts of the project. |
